I. Primary Functions and Benefits
By sharpening the tip, different geometries can be achieved to optimize arc behavior:
DC Welding: A truncated conical tip is common, with the tip angle usually controlled between 20° and 50°. This concentrates heat and increases the arc force on the base metal.
AC Welding (specifically for Aluminum): A spherical (balled) or obtuse end (60°–90°) is preferred to allow the electrode to form a natural ball shape, preventing overheating and arc instability.
Key Benefits:
1. Improved Arc Concentration: Enhances arc-starting and arc-stability capabilities.
2. Higher Welding Quality: Produces more uniform weld penetration and bead width.
3. Extended Lifespan: Reduces electrode burn-off and wear.
4. Environmental Efficiency: A more stable arc leads to lower electrode consumption.
II. Performance Characteristics
The sharpened tungsten electrodes from Chinatungsten Online (produced by HAO CARBIDE) are widely recognized for their exceptional properties:
High Melting Point: Remains stable during welding without deformation or melting due to heat accumulation.
Excellent Conductivity: Low resistance supports stable current transmission and arc continuity.
Mechanical Strength & Corrosion Resistance: High mechanical strength and the ability to form a dense protective oxide layer against oxidizing environments.
Low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: Minimizes tip deformation or irregularities caused by thermal expansion and contraction.
High Hardness: Suitable for repetitive operations with excellent wear resistance.
Low Evaporation Rate: Ensures a long service life even under high-temperature conditions.
III. Suitable Material Types by Composition
Different tungsten compositions are suited for specific sharpening scenarios:
Ceriated Tungsten (WC): A popular non-radioactive option. Ideal for sharpened tips in low-current DC welding of carbon steel, stainless steel, and titanium alloys.
Lanthanated Tungsten (WL): Features excellent electron emission. Versatile for both AC and DC conditions; often sharpened for DC applications.
Thoriated Tungsten (WT): A traditional material for DC welding. Offers high stability, though specialized protection is required during the sharpening process due to its thorium content.
Pure Tungsten (WP) & Zirconiated Tungsten (WZ): Mainly used for AC welding of aluminum and magnesium alloys. Sharpening is generally not recommended; instead, the ends are processed into a spherical shape.
IV. Preparation and Sharpening Process
HAO CARBIDE utilizes powder metallurgy to manufacture these electrodes, involving powder preparation, compacting, sintering, hot working, and finishing.
Raw Materials: High-purity tungsten trioxide (WO3WO3) or Ammonium Metatungstate (AMT) is reduced by hydrogen to produce tungsten powder.
Compacting: Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP) or die pressing is used based on the required shape.
Sintering: Performed in a high-temperature atmosphere to achieve a dense structure and uniform grain size.
Hot Working: Includes initial swaging and multiple drawing stages to improve density and grain orientation.
Finishing: Mechanical processing is used to create the conical angle or mirror-bright surface finish.
The Sharpening Step:
We use specialized grinding machines for longitudinal/axial grinding. This ensures a uniform surface and prevents arc wandering caused by transverse grinding marks. Fine-grit diamond wheels are used, applying uniform pressure while keeping the electrode axis perpendicular to the grinding head. Our professional equipment supports preset angles (e.g., 15°, 30°, 45°) and includes dust collection systems for operator safety.
V. Industrial Applications in Welding
In TIG welding, the tip geometry of the sharpened electrode is vital for arc control and must match the power supply characteristics:
DC Conditions: By grinding the tip to a sharp cone, the cathode spot is stabilized at the tip. This compresses the arc diameter, concentrating heat input at the center of the weld. For stainless steel or titanium sheets (under 1.0mm), a 30° angle with a 1.6mm electrode is recommended to achieve a narrow heat-affected zone (HAZ) at 80A~120A. For thicker workpieces, increasing the angle to 50°–60° with a small flat at the tip reduces current density and the risk of tip burn-off.
AC Conditions (Aluminum/Magnesium): To facilitate the "cathodic cleaning" effect required to break through oxide layers, electrodes are often preheated to allow the tip to melt into a hemispherical shape. The ball diameter is typically kept within 1.0 to 1.5 times the electrode diameter to balance cleaning action with tip durability.
VI. Production and Usage Precautions
Production Quality Control: We strictly monitor raw material purity, standardize wet diamond grinding parameters, and inspect dimensions for cone angle and concentricity. All products undergo thorough cleaning and drying.
Usage Guidelines: Select the appropriate tip geometry for the job, follow longitudinal grinding standards, and match the current to the electrode specification. Always inspect the tip condition before use and store electrodes in a dry environment.

|
|
(Disposal Standards) |
Classify thoriated electrodes per environmental regs; non-thoriated are recycled as general scrap metal. |
